2018 Resolutions Recap & 2019 Resolutions List

So 2018 didn’t go quite as planned… well not at all actually. Out of my 52 goals… I managed 4. Which is not great, but it’s better than 0. It’s been a hard year with long term sickness, mental health issues and lots of work. So next year is an important year. A year of achieving and fixing.

Mary Bell

In late 1960’s  England, one of the most unusual murder cases came to light. One that would shock the nation and raise many questions.

On May 25th May 1968, the body of 4 year old Martin Brown was found dead from asphyxiation in an abandoned home in a rough neighbourhood of Newcastle. There were no suspects to be found. 2 months later another toddler was found asphyxiated on Newcastle waste ground. This time 3 year old Brian Howe. He had been strangled and mutilated, with an M carved into his chest and his penis cut off. The police knew they had a serial killer on their hands and launched a large scale investigation that involved interviewing 1,200 children. Two of the children interviewed were of interest to the police due to the answers they gave being suspicious. The two girls were 11 and 13 year old, Mary Bell and Normal Bell, who although they shared a surname, were unrelated beyond friendship.

The girls eventually broke down during interrogation and turned on each other, both claiming that the other had squeezed the child’s neck until they stopped moving. Mary claimed that Norma had made the cuts to the body. On August 5th 1968, both girls were put under arrest. Mary’s response to this was ‘That’s alright by me’.

During the trial both girls reacted very differently to the proceedings. Norma appeared overwhelmed and confused whereas Mary was extremely confident and self possessed. After 9 days of evidence Norma was found not guilty, whereas Mary was found guilty of killing the boys. However, due to her young age it was impossible for her to be tried for murder and was thus sentenced to life for manslaughter. She spent 8 years in a young offenders institute followed by 4 years in an open prison before being released with a new identity in 1980. Mary Bell became the first person in British history to be awarded a lifetime anonymity order. This meant that she was provided with a new name and a life away from the public eye. This order was also given to her daughter to allow her a peaceful life. Mary moved to the USA, settled down with a husband and had children, outside of the release of her tell-all book in 1998, she’s managed to stay out of the public eye.

The question remains in what leads an 11 year child to commit two murders. While it’s impossible to ever say for sure, if we look at Mary’s upbringing, we can begin to see some contributing factors.

Mary Bell was born in 1957 to mentally unstable 17 year old prostitute, Betty Bell. Betty took an instant disliking to her daughter and began abusing the child from a very early age. There were at least several attempts on Mary’s life at her mothers hands. One attempt involved Mary managing to get hold of a container of bleach and another where Mary took an overdose of sleeping pills as a toddler. Betty Bell claimed that it was purely an accident, however an eye-witness claims to have seen her giving Mary the tablets as sweets. The most vindictive murder attempt came when Betty Bell pushed her daughter from a window. Mary suffered severe head trauma during the fall and sustained damage to her pre-frontal cortex, the area of the brain used in voluntary movements and decision making. Mary has also claimed that from the age of 4, her mother would pimp her out to clients to engage in sexual acts with them. So while it’s never okay to provide someone with an excuse for a crime, especially not for the murder of children. It is important to look at where the criminal came from and what may have led them down the path in the hopes of preventing a similar tragedy happening in the future.

AHA! 10 interesting facts! Episode 1

1. In 1999 a Swedish radiologist working in Norway decided to go sking with some friends. While on the mountain she slipped and fell through a frozen stream and was trapped under the ice.

It took 80 minutes for her friends and a rescue team to pull her out and get her to safety. Her body temperature was measured at 13.7 C or 56.7 F, the lowest ever recordered body temperature for a surviving patient.

Upon arriving at the hospital in which she worked, doctors recall her being ghost white, with no pulse and unable to breath. The doctors treating her refused to give up and decided that even if she was clinically dead in front of them, they wouldn’t rest until she was warm and dead. Doctors pumped her blood out of her body, warmed it and pumped it back again. Her heart eventually began pumping again shortly after. Her brain which had survived due to being flash-frozen and reduced to a state in which it barely needed any oxygen managed to warm up and enabled the woman to make a full recovery.

Following the accident she continued to work in the hospital and still does to this day.

2. The English stereotype of Welsh people being sheep-shagger is a longstanding one and has been present for hundreds of years… but where does it come from? One explanation argues that in Medieval times the Welsh were a poor and hungry nation due to oppression from the English. Medieval English law stated that anyone caught stealing a sheep would lose a hand for their crime. Due to the abundance of land in wales, lots of it was used as farmland and thus sheep were a common creature for the poor to steal. Those caught would claim that they were not stealing the sheep, they were simply taking it to have sex with before returning it. This carried a much lighter sentence and thus lead to the sheep shagger stereotype being born.

3. Everyone knows your voice sounds different in your head to what others hear. This is due to your own voice being heard in a different way. When you listen to others speak it is caused by vibrating sound waves hitting your ear drum and then being processed, where as your own voice is heard through vibrations inside of your skull.

4. Children often learn at school that Zebra’s are white with black stripes. This is not the case. Scientisits studying embryo’s have found that Zebra’s are fully black and develop white stripes and an underbelly during gestation.

5. Sir David Attenborough always wears the same outfit, a blue shirt and khaki trousers so as to help keep continuity during filming scenes which may be filmed months and thousands of miles apart.

6. Getting Blackout drunk doesn’t cause you to forget anything. The heavy influx of alchohol actually inhibits the brain from forming any new memories and thus most of what that happens during this period is lost.

7. A standard 12 oz or 340 gram bottle of honey contains the lifes work of 864 bee’s. Think about that one the next time you slather it over your toast.

8. The Eiffel tower was originally pitched to be in Barcelona by it’s creator Gustave Eiffel. Unfortunately the city decided that the gigantic iron monolith would be an eyesore and rejected it’s construction. Eiffel was forced to search for a new home for his tower and came to an agreement with the city of Paris agreed to build the structure to serve as the archway for the 1889 International Exposition

9. The US has lost 8 nuclear weapons over the course of history and has no idea where they are. 7 of these were the result of vehicular accidents and one was as a result of a crew member accidentally grabbing the emergency release pin by mistake.

10. The world littlest skyscraper stands at 480 inches in whicita falls, texas. The construction firm created the proposal and failed to specify the proposed height was 480 inches and not 480 feet to the investors. Those responsefully for funding the project tried to put a halter to the tiny skyscraper but the courts ruled that the proposal must be honoured and now this little marvel still stands proudly

Etymology: Bury the hatchet – The meaning and origin of phrase

When an arguement comes to it’s conclusion and you wish to make up and resolve the tension, you can refer to this as ‘burying the hatchet’.

Bury the Hatchet

The saying is quite literal in it’s origins and can be traced back to Native American Indian tribes who were famed for using hatchets in combat. The Native American culture most of us are familiar with comes from Hollywood films and is very over-simplified with many of it coming from early 20th century spaghetti westerns which portrayed them as low IQ savages. This was not the case and we know that the Native American tribal culture was a complex structure that dealt with many of the issues that their European invading neighbours were dealing with during the 17th century. Warring tribes would try to resolve their conflict through diplomatic negotiations and if this was successful, the tribes chief would literally bury a hatchet to symbolise an end to violence and bloodshed.

Friday the 13th Killer – David McGreavy

David McGreavy, often refered to as the Friday the 13th killer, is responsible for one of the grisliest crimes in British history. However it’s a crime that puts him in league with other such monsters incuding the Moors murderers, The Roses or the Soham Murders, yet David McGreavy is often forgotten and his horrific wrongdoings are not held in the same regard.

Born into a military family in the 1950’s, McGreavy traveled extensively during his childhood living through England and Germany. After leaving school, he attempted to follow in his fathers footsteps and signed up to the royal navy and started a serious relationship that led to an engagement. This didn’t last long as he found himself court martialled for starting a fire that caused significant damage. He was forced to move back in with his parents and things began to spiral for David McGreavy. He began to drink heavily which meant that he found it increasingly difficult to stay in work as he bounced from job to job. His fiancée left him and eventually his parents could not cope with his chaotic drinking and kicked him out of the house.

David McGreavy was taken in by an old friend of his, Clive Ralph and his wife Elsie Ralph in 1972. They were a married couple with two small children, Paul and Dawn Maria, as well as a third on the way. McGreavy found work in a local factory and paid the Ralph’s £6 a week in rent as well as helping cook meals and occasionally babysit the children.

When the third child Samantha was born, Clive Ralph was working as a lorry driver for his fathers firm and Elsie Ralph found work as a barmaid just down the road from their home. This was not an issue for the Ralph’s as their lodger, David McGreavy, was ‘like a father’ to her children, to use Elsie’s own words. McGreavy began looking after the children more and appeared to everyone as someone that loved children. Things were going well for the Ralph family. This all changed on Friday April 13th 1973.

While babysitting the children, David McGreavy who had been drinking heavily became enraged at one-year-old Samantha, who had been crying for her bottle. McGreavy grabbed Samantha by the throat and squeezed until she could not cry anymore. He also hit her with a bult object and fractured her skull. He then proceeded to slit two-year-old Dawn’s throat and strangle four-year-old Paul to death using a piece of wire. After murdering the three children, David McGreavy went down to the basement to retrieve a pitchfork. He used the pitchfork to mutilate the bodies of the three children, leaving blood and viscera everywhere.

Debating whether or not to bury the children, he made the life scarring decision to take the mutilated bodies of the children outside and to impale them on the wrought iron fence in the garden for the neighbours to find. He then left the home and began to aimlessly walk the streets. By the time Clive and Elsie Ralph came home, the bodies has already been found and the police had cordoned off the Ralph home refusing to allow the parents to see the remains of their children. David McGreavy was arrested later that night and owned up to the killings. He offered no motive other than being irritated by the sound of the baby crying.

Two months after the murders David McGreavy sat in court and was sentenced to multiple life sentences with a minimum of 20 years to be served. The deliberation came after only eight minutes as he had no defence, no motive and no case of diminished responsibility.

David McGreavy has been in prison since 1973, a total of 45 years. In that time he’s been the subject of countless media pieces trying to piece together why he brutally killed three children that he supposedly cared for, but nobody has ever been able to answer that, and David McGreavy does not seem to want to. As of December 2018, he has been back in the news after it came to light that David McGreavy has been cleared for release by a parole board who have deemed him a considerably changed man. The 67-year-old will be freed sometime in 2019. Elsie Ralph, who is now also in her late 60’s, has stated that she feels betrayed after a judge promised her that McGreavy would be behind bars for the rest of his life. David McGreavy took everything from the Ralph’s. Their children, their home, their marriage and their future. Yet he will walk the streets and experience freedom for the remainder of his life. Whether that is right and just is an argument for another time.

Let me know what you think! Should David McGreavy be allowed to leave prison?

Etymology: Pain the town red – The meaning and origin of phrase

PaintTheTownREd

To ‘paint the town red’ is to celebrate spectacularly. You might paint the town red with the girls on a night out or if you got into some mischief on a drunken bender.

According to the town of Melton-Mowbray in England, the phrase can be traced back to a legendary night of partying in 1873 by Henry Beresford the 3rd, often referred to as the Mad Maquis. The story goes that while heavily under the influence and asked to be let through the toll-gate without paying. The Mad Maquis and his cohorts were refused entry and in an act of vengeance they stole some painting supplies, painted the poor tollkeeper and the tollgate with the red paint laying nearby due to some repair work being carried out. The police tried to intervene on the ramage and found themselves beaten and painted red for their troubles. It took multiple officers to aprehend the Mad Marquis and his friends and bring an end to the rampage. The men were fined £100 for the damage caused, and their drunken night would live on in infamy.

Etymology: Close but no cigar – The meaning and origin of phrase

‘Close but no cigar’ is a phrase used to explain when something is close or good but not quite enough. The phrase is of US origin and dates back to the 19th century. American fairs which travelled the country, and still do today, would have fair games that rewarded the player with small prizes for a variety of activities such as throwing a ring on a bottle or a ball into a bucket. Today these prizes are more often than not stuffed animals or toys in one shape or another, with the fairs being aimed at children. However, in the 19th century, fairs were a more family focused piece of entertainment, which shows in the fact that one of the top prizes for these games would be a cigar, so that when a player did well but not well enough, they were close, but not close enough to win a cigar.
