Volunteering in esports: A Case Study

I was recently in a discussion regarding volunteering in esports and as one of the people that managed to use the volunteer route to make a career within esports a reality, I wanted to talk about my experiences and my thoughts on the importance of voluntary work.

I’ll start by outlining my journey. I started volunteering for a small organisation called Adversity in 2010 after going off to University and not having time to play competitively anymore. I received absolutely nothing from the org and I was involved in managing all teams on the PC side of things. During the 6 months I was with the team I signed a sponsorship deal with Thermaltake. I was eventually offered a position to come over and manage the Starcraft 2 and Team Fortress 2 teams for Team Thermaltake. Now this org was run by Thermaltakes European marketing director, so did have some money behind it, however I was unpaid. The org didn’t really work out for me and I was quickly moved to Team Infused, the UK flagship team of Thermaltake. Again unpaid. I managed the PC teams for Team Infused and began to travel to international events, mostly with the SC2 team. Due to a financial issue which left me out of pocket I took the SC2 team to the new global level organisation Western Wolves, an offshoot of LowLandLions. Some of the players I brought with me received a small salary but I was still unpaid. I worked with the team for a couple of years until I decided that esports was going nowhere for me and it was time for me to say goodbye. I will also graduating University. Around 6 months later I was approached by Mousesports to work on their SC2 team which was struggling at the time. I was tired of being unpaid so I requested a small salary, which they agreed upon. I worked for Mousesports for a year and eventually thanks to a combination of references from members of my esports past I was hired by FACEIT to produce their online broadcasts, which I have been doing since 2014. I’ve traveled the world, worked on some of the biggest esports events to ever take part and I feel if I hadn’t spent my time volunteering and grinding, that i’d never have made it here.

An Alternative argument that I also feel bares some weight is that smaller orgs simply cannot afford to salary staff members. Every org I worked for in my career (bar Mouz) worked to a shoe-string budget. Even the teams that had sponsors spent all they had on players, by paying staff it would only slow the orgs progress and reduce results needed to secure more sponsors. Many small to medium orgs exist in a very specific place. They fill a space in the market needed to develop talent and grow playerbases. A young player from London who’s decided he is a decent Counter-Strike player will never become a pro without being a member of the smaller orgs and attending local LAN tournaments. These teams can only exist on the backs of the passionate people willing to spend their time and in lots of cases their own cash to fund them. A sliver of these teams will ever grow to household names and most will fail, but they are important stepping stones for everyone involved, the players and the staff… none of which will have been paid.

This post may seem a little rambly, but I hope it offers an argument on why I feel voluntary work is important to esports and can work, it doesn’t always have to go nowhere. However I am a strong supporter of always paying people what their worth (if you can afford to do so!)

RuPaul’s Drag Race winners and where they are now!

S1 – Bebe Zahara Benet

Bebe Zahara Benet Tidus Mino Lists.jpg

The winner of Season 1, Bebe Zahara Benet is by far the least known of all the winners, due to the unavailability of finding Season 1 to watch anywhere! The “CAMEROON” Queen took $25,000 in season 1 after coming into Ru Pauls Drag Race on the back of a modeling career. This modeling career has never stopped and she can still be found around the world on the runway. She’s dabbled in music with a number of singles and in 2018 she found herself back in Ru’s limelight as she was controversially invited to compete on All Stars Season 3. Finding herself in the top 4 due to a mixture of fantastic outfits and fierce looks on top of surprisingly strong comedy chops, Bebe rocketed back into the public eye.

S2 – Tyra Sanchez

Tyra Sanchez Tidus Mino Lists

The youngest queen to wear the crown and arguably the least popular overall. She’s never strayed from the spotlight, with a large present on Twitter and frequent spats and feuds being carried out by Tyra over the platform. In terms of drag she still performs and can be found at many drag events around the USA.

S3 – Raja

Raja Tidus Mino Lists

Raja had one of the most impressive pre-Drag race careers out of all the winning queens, with a career as a top level make-up artist, including being Tyra Banks personal make-up artist. Since winning the show she has started a show on World of Wonder with fellow season 3 alumni Raven called ‘Fashion Photo Ruview’ in which the two critique other queens outfits. Her career a an artist has never slowed and she is still in high demand. On top of this she’s appeared in music videos and has carried out a one woman show.

S4 – Sharon Needles

Sharon Needles Tidus Mino Lists

Sharon brought something new to Drag race during season 4. She brought performance art, something that hadn’t been present in the first 3 seasons. Sharon’s fantastic horror themed drag shocked audiences and secured her the title and $100,000! Sharon’s gone on to have a successful music career with her horror themed synth pop / rock tracks. Sharon continues to tour the world as a drag artist and musician and shock the world with her stellar looks.

AS1 – Chad Michaels

Chad Michaels Tidus Mino Lists

Chad was so close to winning Season 4, and comfortably won All Stars Season 1, a hall of fame show that was run between Seasons 4 and 5. Chad who proved his skills as a phenomenal Cher look-alike and overall drag queen is still slaying it in 2018. Chad has most recently appeared on the shows 2 Broke Girls and Jane the Virgin.

S5 – Jinkx Monsoon

Jinkx Monsoon Tidus Mino Lists.jpg

Jinkx was the shock winner of Season 5. The narcoeptic Jewish drag queen was up against stiff competition in what could easily be described as the strongest season in Ru Paul Drag Race history. Jinkx was an outsider all throughout the competition and in the last episodes managed back to back defences against the clique of Rolaskatox to take the crown, managing a wonderful comedic lip sync to Yma Sumac’s ‘Malambo No 1’. Since winning Season 5, Jinkx has gone on to appear in many threatre productions including ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch’, Hairspray and the Vaudevillians. Jinkx made headlines by voicing a character on popular television show ‘Steven Universe’.

S6 – Bianca Del Rio

Bianco del Rio Tidus Mino Lists

Bianca Del Rio started season 6 with a big mouth and a bitchy wit. However we learned mid season that this mean girl was actually one of the nicest and most kind hearted queens on the show due to his motherly relationship with Adore Delano. Bianca will read you to shreds… before helping you with your problem. Bianca has stormed ahead since winning season 6, with sell-out comedy movies and even two full length feature films ‘Hurricane Bianca’ and ‘Hurricane Bianca 2: From Russia with Hate’

S7 – Violet Chachki

Violet Chachki Tidus Mino Lists

Violet Chachki was one of the most divisive winners of Drag Race as she struggled to make many friends and made plenty of enemies on her way to the crown. The sickening queen with the 18 inch waist showed off some jaw dropping looks throughout the season and this has not changed since the season ended. Violet became the first drag queen to to take part in a major lingerie campaign in 2017 as she modelled for Bettie Page. In 2018 she walked the runway at Milan Fashion Week for Moschino. She also toured with Vita Don Tease in her neo-burlesque show ‘The art of the Tease’ in which she used her aerial silk and aerial hoop skills to wow audiences. On top of this she has released a number of singles.

S8 – Bob the Drag Queen

Bob the Dragon Tidus Mino Lists.jpg

Bob entered the workroom ‘Purse First’ and managed to leave in first place with the crown. Bob was a strong favourite throughout the season with his unparalleled comedy chops, surprising looks and even fantastic dancing. Since winning Bob has released a TV comedy special titled ‘Suspiciously Large Woman’, he’s starred in the film ‘Cherry Pop’ and he’s even found time to write and release a drag queen themed comic book titled ‘Kickass Drag Queen’. He still somehow manages to find time to tour with his drag preformance.

AS 2 – Alaska Thunderfuck 5000

Alaska Thunderfuck Tidus Mino Lists

All Stars 2 had some incredibly tough competition, however Alaska managed to rise to the top and take the crown. Even managing to survive a meltdown and bribe attempt during the season. Since appearing on the show Alaska has had a fantastic music career as a solo artist and as a member of the AAA Girls with fellow Drag race alumni Willam and Courtney Act. She’s walked in a Marco Marco fashion show and currently spends her time touring the world with the AAA girls and as herself.

S9 – Sasha Velour

Sasha Velour Tidus Mino Lists

Sasha was already an established preformer on the New York drag scene prior to joining drag race. Publishing a magazine title ‘Velour’ and hosting a drag show titled ‘Nightgowns’. Since taking the crown she has not given up on these projects and they continue to take place and grow. Sasha is currently taking her drag act across the US with a European tour in the near future.

AS 3 – Trixie Mattel

Trixie Mattel Tidus Mino Lists.jpg

Trixie was All Star Season 3’s shock winner as she struggled through the season in the middle of the pack and managed to take the title at the last minute. Season 3’s crown was almost confirmed to be Ben Delacremes, before she shockingly resigned from the competition. Outside of drag race Trixie has hosted a number of shows with fellow Drag queen Katya. On top of her drag comedy shows and hosting gigs, Trixie has a successful country music career and has released a number of albums.

Wrestlemania 34 Card & Predictions!

Wrestlemania 34 Predictions Tidus Mino Lists.jpg

Mania 34 is the big one. The Show of Shows. One of the best cards in the last decade at the very least. There are no filler matches, no weak links. The card is stacked from start to finish and there’s something for every wrestling fan to enjoy, from the multi man battle royals to the debut of Ronda Rousey, to the streak vs title match to the return of Daniel Bryan and even the tease of a potential Undertaker vs Cena match. This card is a treat and should be an absolute spectacle.

Andre the Giant Battle Memorial

Tidus Mino.jpg

The ARMBAR is always a free for all in terms of winners. There are so many potential winners that I won’t go into detail on any of the other competitors. My pick to win the ARMBAR is Dolph Ziggler. He’s returning after a short break and could do with the push from winning the match.

Wrestlemania Womens Battle Royale

Battle Royale.jpg

The ‘First’ wrestlemania womens Battle Royale has a tonne of buzz behind it. One storyline in particular has dominated the womens division and that is Sasha Banks and Bayley’s tenuous friendship. The Sasha Banks heel turn has been teased for a long time and I feel WWE will pull the trigger at Mania and have Sasha turn on Bayley to take the trophy.

Cedric Alexander vs Mustafa Ali

Cedric vs Mustafa Wrestlemania 34 Tidus Mino Lists

The cruiserweights have been putting in work since the creation of 205 live and Alexander vs Ali could well be the sleeper hit of the event, much like Neville vs Austin Aries was at last years Mania. I haven’t closely followed the tournament but I have enjoyed the packages displayed on Raw regarding this match. I feel Mustafa Ali will take the tournament and the title.

Brock Lesnar (c) vs Roman Reigns

Lesner vs Roman Reigns Wrestlemania 34 Tidus Mino Lists

This match will be good. I know that goes against what most people are expecting, but I do feel that Reigns will put on a classic and once again prove that he can get a strong performance out of anyone. Not to say Brock isn’t one of the greatest wrestlers on the roster, but he has a history of lazy matches focused on finishers and completely lacking story. Roman on the other hand is known for long drawn out slobberknockers that go down to the wire. While we are all certain of the result as rumours are abound of Lesnar returning to UFC, I feel Romans inevitable victory will come after a strong 20+ minute match that hopefully won’t leave a bitter taste in our mouths. It still won’t get him over like the WWE want though.

AJ Styles (c) vs Shinsuke Nakamura

AJ Styles Shinsuke Nakamura Wrestlemania 34 Tidus Mino Lists.jpg

The dream match that everyone has been dieing to see since Nakamura was called up from NXT. A rematch of their legendary NJPW showdown. This match has a tonne of hype behind it and a lot of pressure to live upto. I am nervous for this match as generally (unpopular opinion incoming) but I am underwhelmed by Shinsuke matches. Even his legendary WWE feud with Samoa Joe felt heavily carried by Joe and while I am in no way insinuating that Shinsuke isn’t a fantastic wrestler, he has to do something else to attract my attention and make me root for him as a competitor. Thankfully AJ Styles is just the man to tease a potential 5 star match out of this showdown. I hope that the two will put on a barn burner and I do expect that AJ will retain the title as I don’t feel the WWE would known how to handle and write a Shinsuke title reign.

The Miz (c) vs Seth Rolins vs Finn Balor

Finn Balor The Miz Seth Rollins Wrestlemania 34 Tidus Mino Lists

As a Miz fan I truly hope that he retains the title here, but considering the other two men in this match…  the chances are slim. Finn Balor is WWE’s lost child. They were fully behind him after his NXT call-up and put the newly created Universal title on him right away. Unfortunately he was injured and had to vacate the title and sadly has never recovered from the fall. Now Finn is completely stuck and I can’t see him picking up the title and I really don’t think the WWE respect him as a performer or know what to do with him. Seth has to be the favourite coming into this match. He’s the future of the company and the WWE seem to know it. However I am going to go with my gut and say that the Miz retains due to either interference from the Miztourage or other similar heel tactics. However their are rumours that the Miz will be taking time away from the company to focus on his new daughter which would of course make it more likely that the belt would go to either Seth or Finn.

Randy Orton (c) vs Bobby Roode vs Jinder Mahal vs Rusev

Rusev Day Wrestlemania 34 Tidus Mino Lists

Rusev is winning. No doubt in my mind. It IS Rusev day after all.

Alexa Bliss (c) vs Nia Jax

Alexa Bliss Nia Jax Wrestlemania 34 Tidus Mino Lists.jpg

A hard match to predict. My head says Nia but my heart says Alexa. Alexa Bliss has been one of the best Womens champions in years. Scratch that, one of the best Champions period. I know when compared to Nia Jax, Alexa should lose quite easily, but I don’t think a Nia Jax title run is good for the division or something that the Universe want to see. I’m not sure how Alexa will win… but I think she will… somehow.

Charlotte Flair (c) vs Asuka

Charlotte Flair Asuka Wrestlemania 34 Tidus Mino Lists.jpg

Title vs Streak. Asuka’s streak is one of the big storylines in the WWE and has been for almost 2 years now. Charlotte has been one of the most dominant womens champions but has arguably become very stale recently. I don’t feel Asuka will lose the streak before she at least picks up a belt on the main roster. The match will be close with plenty of near falls that will stop our hearts in suspense, but I do think that when the bell rings it’ll be Asuka being draped in gold. Cue carmella’s music, her running to the ring to fight an exhausted Asuka before being forced to submit in embarrassing fashion.

The Bar (c) vs Strowman & TBD

The Bar vs Braun Strowman Wrestlemania 34 Tidus Mino Lists

This match surely depends on who the TBD is. If Braun is partnered up with Curt Hawkins or Elias then I feel that the Bar retains and Brauns partner will eat the pin. If Braun is partnered with someone like Big Cass or Batista then there’s no way the Bar are retaining here. There’s not much to say without knowing the partner. I am going to risk it and go for Strowman & TBD.

The Usos (c) vs The New Day vs The Bludgeon Brothers

Wrestlemania 34 Tag Team Tidus Mino Lists.jpg

The Feud that will never end gets a new component. The Usos have been fighting The New Day for what feels like an eternity now. I don’t think anyone is still enjoying the 57th rendition of the same match up. Now a new challenger has been included, the Bludgeon brothers. I find it very difficult to route for either the Usos or the New Day, simply because we’ve seen very lengthy reigns from both and I really want to see the division shaken up with new feuds and new competitors. It is for the reason that I hope the Bludgeon Brothers take the gold.

Kurt Angle and Ronda Rousey vs Triple H and Stephanie McMahon

WrestleMania 34 Ronda Rousey Triple H Kurt Angle Stephanie McMahon Tidus Mino Lists.jpg

I’ve no idea what to expect from this match. How good is Ronda now? Was Stephanie ever good? Can Kurt relive former glory or will he still have to compete at 50%. I feel like the match will end up as Ronda beating on Stephanie in an unconvincing manner, while Kurt and Triple H put on a relatively weak (in comparison to their former days) display that ends in a double submission as Kurt and Ronda take the win.

Daniel Bryan and Shane McMahon vs Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens

Daniel Bryan Wrestlemania 34 Tidus Mino Lists

The Return of Daniel Bryan. The highlight of the card for manner, it’s such a shame that Shane has forced his way into this match. I truly wanted and expected Daniels Bryan’s return to feature a showdown against the Miz, but thankfully we will see him (or a reduced Dbry) go toe to toe against Zayn and Owens, two of the most accomplished wrestlers on the roster. I fully expect Daniel and Shane to take the victory and make a very public spectacle as they fire Sami and Kevin… who will turn up on Raw the following night.

The Undertaker vs John Cena

Cena vs The Undertaker Wrestlemania Tidus Mino Lists

Will this match even happen? I think so. I think the Undertaker will turn up with the Biker Deadman gimmick and give us the match that we should have had years ago against John Cena. It’s impossible to predict how this match will go down. Will Taker have had time to recover from his hip surgery and be able to move more than his previous Mania bouts? Can Cena script a match that is entertaining and doesn’t rely too much on the Deadman to preform? It’s impossible to answer these questions. I think that the Undertaker will take the fight and retire his Biker Gimmick and thus fully retire as a wrestler in the WWE.

NXT Takeover New Orleans Predictions

NXT Takeovers are the little brother of the big 5 PPV’s, although more often than not they upstage the main rosters efforts. NXT started life as a training ground for rookies and newer superstars and while it still does function as a way for newer wrestlers to learn the ropes, it now features so many legendary stars that some would argue it’s the best of the 4 shows. I’ve put together my thoughts on the card and how I think it’ll go down.

The Undisputed Era (Adam Cole & Kyle O’Reilly) (c) vs The Authors of Pain vs Roderick Strong & Pete Dunne in a triple threat tag team match for the NXT Tag Team Championship & the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Trophy

Tag Team NXT Takeover New Orleans 2018 Tidus Mino Lists

This is a hard one to predict. All three teams have a very valid claim on the titles for very different reasons. AoP could well become the first 3 time NXT Tag Team champions, they have been the final bosses of NXT for a long time now, with raw power and fantastic chemistry they are more than capable of taking this match home… but I don’t think they will. I feel that AoP are one of the NXT teams to be called up during the superstar shakeup to join either Raw or Smackdown. Moving onto Roderick Strong & Pete Dunne we see the tried and tested fighting teammate gimmick, something we’ve seen tried and failed in the past but also a gimmick that has proven to get struggling superstars over. The best example that comes to mind is Sheamus & Cesaro (also known as The Bar), two stars that the WWE struggled to do anything with and one (Sheamus) was actively disliked by the WWE Universe. A year later and the team is doing swimmingly. Roddy & Pete could well follow this formula. However I feel that the Undisputed Era are defending here. The match should be a slobberknocker with all 6 men giving it their all. I am predicting an injury angle relating to Adam Cole, something that will cost him the ladder match later in the night.

Ember Moon (c) vs Shayna Baszler for the NXT Women’s Championship

Womens NXT Takeover New Orleans 2018 Tidus Mino Lists

Ember Moon has been the champion since her real life roommate Asuka went upto the main division. Shayna Baszler has been an odd force since her inclusion in the may young classic. She was much hyped considering her status as a legitimate UFC fighter and one of the four horsewomen of UFC (along with Ronda Rousey). However since Ronda joined the company, Shayna has seemingly lost a lot of steam and a lot of the wow factor has disappeared. She’s still a frightening brawler and surely has to be the favourite on paper to win this match-up. I am predicting Ember to retain as I feel that putting a belt on Ronda’s lesser known horsewoman will only hurt her progression and make Ronda look weaker in the eyes of the WWE universe.

Adam Cole vs EC3 vs Killian Dain vs Lars Sullivan vs Ricochet vs Velveteen Dream

Men Wrestling NXT Takover New Orleans 2018 Tidus Mino Lists.jpg

The hardest call of the night. Let’s run through the 6 men briefly. As stated earlier in the article, I feel Adam Cole will be injured or somehow inhibited after pulling double duty and fighting in two matches on the card, I don’t see The Undisputed Era getting two sets of belts in one night. The Velveteen dream has been one of the biggest prospects on the roster since joining NXT. Despite being so young at just 22 years of age, he’s a phenomenal talent that has already proved his worth in the division. While it’s perfectly reasonable for the Dream to pick up the belt, I don’t think he’s quite ready for a championship run in the eyes of the universe. Killian Dain is someone i’ve been slightly disappointed with since joining NXT. He’s very underused in both character work and in big match opportunities. I don’t feel the WWE know how to use Dain and I can see him simply being filler in this match. Similarly I think Lars Sullivan will get in some strong offence but not really impact the overarching storyline of the match. Ricochet is the biggest star out of the 6 and has only recently started competing outside of house shows. I think it’s a bit too early for Ricochet to pick up the championship here. Finally EC3. EC3 is as arrogant as it gets, when the North American championship was announced he thanked Regal for giving it to him, before being shocked that he’d have to compete in a match to receive it. Generally when an arrogant heel makes a claim on a belt they have no chance at winning it. However this time I feel the swerve is incoming and EC3 will take the belt at the end of the day, perhaps by exploiting an injured Adam Cole to do so.

Andrade “Cien” Almas (c) (with Zelina Vega) vs Aleister black

Men's NXT Takeover New Orleans 2018 Tidus Mino Lists

Cien is the biggest surprise for me that NXT has ever produced. I’ve been a fan of his since he joined the division but was admittedly getting very tired of the same schtick every match, the almost identical matches and the absolutely zero wins that ever came his way. I’d all but given up on him and was expecting his release or departure back to the indies to come at some point. However Zelina Vega (someone I was also expecting to leave after her partners departure) completely revived the character and made him into something very special, something that has comfortably sat on top of the division for quite some time now and someone I expect to retain and deliver Aleister Black his first PPV defeat in NXT. Aleister Black is amazing there’s no doubt about that. However I just feel that the WWE won’t want to repeat the issue they have with Asuka by leaving someone undefeated for so long and not being able to allow them to lose, and I feel they will give Black a loss here to make him seem more human and to keep the mystery open for future matches.
Johnny Gargano vs Tommaso Ciampa

Gargano Ciampa NXT Takeover New Orleans 2018 Tidus Mino Lists

The best feud in WWE right now. No doubt. I love these two as #DIY and I love them as feuding superstars. The stipulation states that If Gargano wins, he will be reinstated to NXT. If Ciampa wins, Gargano will be banned from NXT forever. Nowthis stipulation is not something we haven’t seen before and we have seen them frequently go both ways. This one is tough to call and frankly I’d be happy either way. Gargano vs Ciampa has been such an amazing feud and in reality they haven’t really wrestled at all. For this reason i’d be more than happy for Gargano to win and allow us to see the feud continue, with more involvement from Candace Le Rae, Gargano’s wife this feud could really burn bright for another 6 or so months. However this is not the result I am expecting. I believe Ciampa will win by focusing on a specific part of Gargano’s body and injuring him before humiliating him and making him tap out and thus leading to his firing from NXT. This will lead to Gargano to be drafted onto either Monday night Raw or Smackdown the following week. Either way, I’ll be happy with the result as I know both of these men have far more to give, either against each other or against other members of the roster.

5 Things I hope Rockstar won’t mess up in Red Dead Redemption 2

The game coming out in 2018 (at least we hope) that has the most hype behind it is undoubtedly Red Dead Redemption 2. After the monsters that are GTA 5 and Grand Theft Auto Online, the bar has been set extremely high. However those games weren’t without issue. I have put together a list of things I hope Rockstar won’t mess up in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Red Dead Redemption Tidus Mino Lists

5

Generally in the modern gaming industry the mantra bigger is better is key. However I feel that with a game like RDR, I feel this is not the way to go. The Original Red Dead suffered from far too much barren space and traversing the wilderness with very little to do. If Rockstar were to follow the industry trend of increasing the world size, I fear that they will struggle to fill the world with things to do, due to the time period in which the game is set.

Open World Red Dead Redemption 2 Tidus Mino Lists.jpg

4

Don’t make the game too repetitive. The Original Red Dead Redemption suffered from a lack of activities for the player to take part in. This is a by-product of the games setting. In the GTA titles some of the most popular gameplay elements are things like races, crime spree’s, flying planes and other similar activities. Coupled with the amazing sound design, fantastic music and radio stations. These features simply cannot exist in RDR due to the games setting and time period. Rockstar will have to pull out all the stops to keep the players attention and make the world feel rich and fleshed out.

drinking Read Dead Redemption Tidus Mino Lists.jpg

3

Don’t remove switchable characters. One thing that made GTA 5 so exciting and feel so fresh was the character wheel. This enabled users to switch between 3 characters at will and experience three different styles of play with three different special abilities. In Certain missions you’d be able to complete different objectives before swithching to a different character to blow up a door or lead the cops away. This was one of the biggest and best innovations in the series and it’d be a shame to see it go away. Similarly rumours have been circling that not 3 but 7 characters will be playable in this manner. I feel this is far too many and we will struggle to connect with the characters and therefore care about the story.

GTA character wheel Red Dead Redemption Tidus Mino Lists.png

2

Don’t underestimate demand. This is a simple one, but the last 3 GTA launches have been littered with server issues and in the case of Grand Theft Auto online was completely unplayable on launch. Rockstar must know that RDR2 is going to be a huge hit, so I hope they invest in servers that accomodate the number of sales.

Please no single player microtransactions. If we learnt anything from the gaming industry in 2017, it’s that fans will no longer take having their wallets milked without a fight. The first instance of fans talking with their wallet was Star Wars Battlefront 2. A game in which many gameplay elements were locked behind a paywall, despite being a full retail priced game. Many of these items (some of which offering better weapons and damage to the highest spenders) found themselves in the single player mode as well. This makes me nervous due to Rockstars latest release GTA Online is sickeningly full of microtranscations. While I can stomach RDR2’s online made being similar to GTA Online, I really do hope that these sales practices won’t find their way into Red Red Redemption 2’s Single player.

5 Reasons Lootboxes are ruining the gaming industry

If one thing can be attributed to the modern age of gaming that has had the biggest impact, it undoubtedly has to be lootboxes. While there are some positives to draw from their introduction, such as the increased longevity of many multiplayer titles due to collectible skins, we will instead focus on 5 reasons that lootboxes are ruining the gaming industry.

Loot box Tidus Mino Lists.gif

5. The value of lootboxes to developers has meant the creation of games designed specifically to suck money from your wallet

The value of lootboxes to developers has meant the creation of games designed specifically to suck money from your wallet or purse has become the new norm in gaming. This has had a disastrous effects to many and resulted in some genres of the gaming industry being virtually unplayable. The rise of the free to play model is heralded by many as a golden age, but in reality the games using this model often make a great deal more than their paid counterparts. By offering items people want behind a paywall (and in some cases hiding things that would be included in the game for most ordinary paid titles), it removes the equal playing field that the video gaming industry used to offer. Now the wealthiest person can become the fanciest looking player. No longer can a player work hard for their best gear and weapons, instead the spoils go to those that drop the most coin. And don’t get me started on pay to win games that offer damage boost or overpowered weapons as random drops… those are just wrong!

Loot Box 2 Tidus Mino Lists

4. Games with potential are going too hard into lootboxes far too early

Games with potential are going too hard into lootboxes far too early. While I understand the allure of the cash for many smaller developers without large financial backing during the development stage. I feel many smaller developers are introducing and focusing on lootboxes far too early. Game like PUBG and Battallion 1944 are suffering from a wealth of game issues, bugs and a graphical simplicity. However they have both found time to introduce a huge list of custom weapon skins locked behind a lootbox paywall.

Battalion 1944 Tidus Mino Lists.jpg

3. Lootboxes are currently dealing with the issue of whether or not it should be classed as gambling

Lootboxes are currently dealing with the issue of whether or not it should be classed as gambling. If they are classified as such, this would have huge implications on the industry, especially considering how many businesses have structured their business model to rely heavily on in game purchases and lootboxes. If lootboxes are deemed gambling, will we see a change to a different model? Will we see some games die as a result? Will companies managed to find loopholes to get around the ruling? All of these results could happen and it’ll be interesting to see the implications should lootboxes be deemed as gambling.

Gambling Loot Box Tidus Mino Lists

2. Lootboxes and random drops prohibit players from buying the items that they want to

Lootboxes and random drops prohibit players from buying the items that they want to (or better yet, unlock them like they good old days). This is a growing sentiment within the gaming industry. Many indie titles are now advertising ‘no in game purchases’ as a selling feature. Many gamers are refusing to buy titles that include lootboxes or just free to play games in general. I feel that an open marketplace system that allows players to simply buy additionally skins or items if they want instead of rolling the dice and hoping for the best, will become more commonplace. I feel that if the gambling ruling does pass and lootboxes are forced to show you the probability of making your money back on a purchase will put off many users and force developers to allow the opportunity for players to just buy what they want to buy.

In game purchase Loot Boxes Tidus Mino Lists

1. Far too easy to access for children

The controversy surrounding lootboxes and cosmetic skins primarily boils down to one issue. Children. It’s far too easy to access for children. As the items have no real world value, there currently aren’t any legislation that prohibits under 18’s from using their parents credit cards to open lootboxes and then use those in air quotes worthless skins to gamble on esports matches. The rise in online gambling using in game cosmetic items has been huge and in 2015 was valued at a multi billion dollar industry. Due to the nature of how cosmetic items are obtained (generally through lootboxes) there is no age gating on many of these sites, as no credit card is required to sign up, generally just access to Steam. If any factor is going to force change, it’ll be the media reporting on children gambling and losing thousands on items opened in lootboxes.

Top 12 things you don’t know about Final Fantasy 10!

Judging from my blog’s name, you can clearly tell that I was and still am a huge fan of Final Fantasy 10. Although it’s not my favourite game in the series, it will always hold a special place in my heart. I’ve scoured the internet to create a list of what I feel are 12 of the most interesting facts that you don’t know about FFX…probably.

At the start of the game, the player is given the option to rename the main character Tidus to any name of their choosing. This was not something new to the series, however this was the last game to offer this choice, and the choice was only given for the main character. Every other character in the game is given a set name that cannot be altered by the player. This decision also gave a unique problem in that none of the other characters are ever able to name the main character, due to the player being able to name him from Tidus. Therefore throughout the game Tidus is just referred to as he or him.

FFX was the first title in the series to feature full voice acting. This was a landmark not only for the series, but also for the video game industry as a whole. Since the introduction of voice acting in Final Fantasy, fully voices titles simply became the norm. To many the introduction was too much of a change and marks the end of the Final Fantasy series as they knew it. Some quite poor voice acting in parts didn’t do much to make the change easier for sceptics.

In every previous FF title, the story was told via text. The player was a 3rd party watching the story unfold from the distance and in many situations would know more than specific characters regarding the plot. With the introduction of voice acting, many additional storytelling techniques were available. FFX was the first title to introduce first person storytelling. Tidus would tell us what was happening through a voice over indicating his thought process. Often the player would learn something as Tidus learnt it, which lead to suprises or issues to solve.

Before FFX, we had never had a direct sequel to a Final Fantasy game, with each subsequent sequel being set in an entirely new world with new characters. FFX’s successes brought about the release of 10 part 2, featuring most of the games main cast and expanding on some of the storylines set in the original. Unfortunately the game was underwhelming and generally recieved as very poor. This hasn’t stopped Square from making sequels in following games.

Final Fantasy was always a very traditional Japanese style turn based role playing game. This involved characters on one side of the screen and enemies on the other side. Each character takes turns to attack and the player is given unlimited time to select a move. FFX was in fact the final game in the series to use this style of gameplay, with the following title FF12 having free-roaming monsters that you fight (something that was planned for FFX but scrapped due to hardware limitations… and that’s a bonus fact for you)

The airship is a recurring feature in every Final Fantasy game since 7. When the player reaches a certain point in the game they can fly around the map to their heart’s content. 10 is the first game that allows the player to input coordinates to reach secret locations that cannot be accessed any other way.

Spoiler warning… for a 17 year old game. Final Fantasy 10 is the first game in which the main character is not present at the end of the game. With every other title in the series we get the traditional hero’s tale. We see the rise of the character, their trials and tribulations and then them overcoming. However in FFX the main character Tidus does not make it to the end, so we never experience the satisfaction of his final success.

FFX is the only FF to feature a zombie as a playable character. The game features ‘souls’ in which a dead spirit manifests as energy that then has to be sent on to the farplane by a summoner. During the middle of the story, spoiler warning for a 17 year old game once again, it is revealed that Auron is infact a soul that has not been sent on yet and is hiding this in order to help the characters in their quest.

Blitzball is one of the most remarkable features in Final Fantasy 10. During the game you are able to build your Blitzball team from recruited players around the world. There is one played named Durren, who fully disappears if you do not sign him when you first see him. As soon as you combat the first iteration of Sin, you will lose the ability to sign him. This makes him unique as every other blitzball player can be recruited at any time.
